Friskies Sponsoring a Best Cat Video Award
Friskies cat food brand is sponsoring “The Friskies” as a national contest to find and honor the best in original Internet cat videos with prizes and donations to cat rescues and shelters which includes a $15,000 Grand Prize.
I think the Internet is totally made up of cute videos, don’t you?
Shaun Belongie, Friskies brand manager says, “We love cat videos because they showcase the imagination of both cats and their owners. Some may say that there are too many cat videos on the Internet already. We don’t think so. We’re launching ‘The Friskies’ because we think the next great cat video is just waiting to be discovered.”
“The Friskies” formally celebrates the genre of Internet cat videos by awarding cash prizes and trophies in specific categories. The contest also rewards the online community’s participation efforts with donations of Friskies cat food to cat charity organization partners. Friskies has committed to donate 125,000 cans of cat food to cat charity organization partners. Each time someone enters the contest, votes, or likes or shares a video; five additional cans of Friskies cat food will be added to the total number of cans to be donated, up to a total of 250,000 cans.
About the Contest
The call for entries is open now through October 12 at www.TheFriskies.com. Up to Twelve finalists will be chosen for the judging and public voting phase in October, and winners will be announced in November. Each finalist will receive a one-year supply of Friskies cat food, and an original Friskies cat statue, the “Cat-uette.” The grand prize winner receives $15,000 and the honor of “Best Video,” and four category prize winners receive $2,500. The Cat-egories include:
Catness: The essence of cat behavior – moments of pure cat awesomeness
Catcom: Your cat in a humorous situation
Catventure: An indoor cat adventure
Catch All: For entries that don’t fit into one of the other categories
Entries must be original videos no longer than three minutes. Videos will be judged on originality, overall artistic impression, cinematography, technical production, audience appeal and entertainment quality, cat playfulness or quirks, sense of a story being told, and portraying cat’s perspective.
Contest Judges
For a contest of this magnitude, Friskies recruited a highly-qualified panel to judge the finalists’ videos. The judges hail from acclaimed professional backgrounds in art design, various aspects of the film industry, and cat lifestyle media:

Cat Shelters Nationwide To Benefit
The best Internet cat video stars and their directors aren’t the only winners of “The Friskies.” The contest is possible in part because many rescue cats have found happy homes…with owners who love sharing videos of their cats’ awesomeness on the Internet.
Based on numbers of entries, views and votes, Friskies will donate up to 250,000 cans of cat food to shelters and rescue organizations across the country. Twenty-five cat charity organizations each may receive 10,000 cans of Friskies cat food by the end of this year. Cat Litter Box Problems — How to Solve Them
My Cat Is Peeing Everywhere. What to do?
This issue is one of the top reasons that cats are either left to go feral or are dumped in a shelter. Cat urine has to be one of the most unpleasant odors.
Before we can help solve this kitty’s problems, we need to ask Mommy or Daddy a few questions:
1) Is this cat spayed or neutered? If male cats aren’t neutered, they can often “spray” to mark territory, which could be confused with pee.
2) Have you taken this cat to the vet to rule out an UTI (Urinary Tract Infection)?
Once these two major things are ruled out in this cat’s case, consider what’s been changed in the house. If this is a cat that always used the cat box and is now refusing to use it, ask yourself:
1) Has anything changed in the house – new baby, new dog, new cat? This may be causing stress and that may be the reaction you’re seeing with your cat.
2) Have you moved the litter box to a new location?
3) Is the litter being changed regularly? (Every day, couple of days, no more than a week…)
4) Have you changed the type of little you’re using? Some cats are finicky (yes, an understatement I know), and may not like the feel of corncob litter on their feet. Or they may not like the smell of the piney litter. Consider if you’ve made a change in the litter.
5) Have you added another cat to the family? If so, some cats will share litter boxes. Most people recommend one litter box per cat – i.e. 2 cats, 2 litter boxes.
6) If everything’s fine on these fronts, you might consider buying a new litter box – maybe an open box, rather than a covered one. Sometimes older cat boxes can retain odors that we cannot smell, but animals with a heightened sense of smell may be bothered by the heavy smell.
7) If your cat is older, you may want to help it navigate the stairs by placing a litter box on every level, reducing the number of times an arthritic or older cat needs to expend energy in this department. Cats cannot tell us that they’re bothered by arthritis or stiff joints and may be taking a short-cut to avoid pain.
8) If there’s a “special spot” on the rugs that the cat likes to pee – consider using an enzymatic cleanser and a fluorescent black light to find the spots.
9) Try buying a plastic carpet runner (from a place like Home Depot or Loews at about a buck a foot) and place the runner upside down (spikes up) to discourage your cat from urinating in that spot.
10) Almost like “potty training” a new puppy, you may need to restrict the out of the box pee-er to a small space – like a crate or a bathroom –that includes a litter box. Start there and when the successfully use the litter box 100 percent of the time, gradually increase the space – with supervision, until you can be convinced that this cat will not pee outside of the litter box again. It’s a process and won’t happen overnight. But, it can be, with patience, cured.
Good luck with your kitty!

Kitten Family Needs Rescue This Weekend in Georgia
Feline 3: This is a litter of 5 owner surrender kittens
This litter of kittens has $100 in sponsorship funds to go to the approved rescue who pulls them.
The animal or animals in this photo MUST have rescue commitment by 4pm on April 30th. Please watch the clock as after 4pm I am unable to do anything further to guarantee their safety. These animals are located in the Cartersville, GA area. ALL rescues or adoptions for these animals are handled ONLY through us at Etowah Valley Humane Society BUT they are not physically located at our facility.
To be considered a rescue in the State of GA you must hold a current license through the Georgia Dept. of Agriculture. Out of state rescues are welcome BUT must hold either of GA out of state license OR work with a currently licensed GA rescue to do the pull for you. Occasionally, we can also work out an adoption to an individual on dogs or cats in this album though for the most part, the reason for this urgent album is due to not enough space being available at EVHS to bring these animals in for adoption with us. Certain animals in the album will be labeled RESCUE ONLY in which case, that means they can ONLY go to a licensed rescue. Otherwise, if you are an individual and see a dog or cat you might be interested in adopting from the urgent album, please feel free to inquire. If you would prefer an animal that is already vetted and that we can tell you more about please visit our website at www.etowahvalleyhumane.org
. Each time a dog or cat is adopted from our facility, we are able to bring one more over from the urgent album.
